Episode 5: Vaginatown

The cast of Californication

After being dumped by the woman he loves, Hank Moody finds himself back at square one as he wakes up, hungover, on a sofa in Lew Ashby's mansion. As he struggles to banish recent events from his drink-addled mind, what appears to be an average Wednesday turns out to be a Tuesday, and he picks Becca up from school on the wrong day, leading to an awkward meeting with Karen. Although it is clear that the whole family is suffering from the break-up, Karen is adamant that she wants to remain separated from Hank.

Lew, meanwhile, is worried about Hank and decides to give him something that he is sure will sort him out - some hot, casual sex with popular TV chef Chloe Metz. Her loud, excitable onscreen persona translates to the bedroom, and as Hank struggles to keep up with her, he experiences a whole new meaning of the word 'cupcake'. After relieving some of his pent-up frustration, Hank decides to hit the town with Lew. But the insatiable Chloe has other ideas; her annoying personality pushes Lew over the edge, and he throws her out of the car on a deserted road. Always a true gentleman beneath his bravado, a shocked Hank waits with her at the roadside, and the pair finally come to terms with some of their fears and regrets. Hank realises that being a woman in the City of Angels is no easy ride, while Chloe admits that she is glad she has a son and not a daughter, leaving Hank worried about Becca's future.

Charlie has some regrets of his own to deal with after his experiences in the 'Slam Van' with young porn star Daisy mean that she is unable to find any more work. Determined to help her out, Charlie attempts to set up a meeting with Ronny Praeger, the 'Spielberg of porn'. His persistence pays off when Ronny decides that he would like Daisy to star in a movie, but this comes at a price for Charlie: Ronny reveals that he wants Charlie to make a financial investment in the movie in return.
