Episode 1: Dangerous Son

The cast of CSI: Miami

Under the bright blue skies of another golden Miami day, SWAT teams race to a seafront property where a man has been taken hostage by an intruder. As police sweep in, a body crashes out of a second-storey window and hits the ground, while a hooded suspect jumps off the roof, hops into a speedboat and flees.

Horatio arrives at the scene to learn that the victim is Andrew Bennett, a probation officer (PO) who was working with some 2000 paroled criminals. “2000 cases and now 2000 suspects,” he remarks. An examination of the body reveals that Bennett was dead from a gunshot wound before he hit the ground – which means the killer most likely threw him out of the window to distract from his escape.

Delko begins retracing Bennett’s movements by studying his Blackberry. Shortly before his death, Bennett received an alert concerning a parole violation by one Kyle Harmon. “That means our PO would have been sending Kyle back to jail,” says Calleigh. Did Kyle kill Bennett to avoid a return to prison?

Delko hauls the lad in for questioning and explains that his electronic tag detected the fact he had been drinking alcohol – a violation of his parole. “Your ankle bracelet has a monitoring system,” Delko says. “Tracks alcohol consumption and your location.” Kyle insists he did not kill his PO and there is no proof he was involved; nevertheless, the blond-haired youth catches Horatio’s eye. He contacts his former sister-in-law, Yelina Salas, now a private investigator, and asks her to check out Kyle’s background.

Meanwhile, the killer’s getaway boat is found with a stash of drugs inside. The boat is registered to the café where Kyle works, but Horatio is more interested in questioning Rick Bates, another of Bennett’s paroled convicts. Bates also works at the café and uses the boat for take-away deliveries but, like Kyle, he denies any involvement in the PO’s death.

Events then take a sinister turn when a kidnapping across town is connected to the Bennett murder. Kathleen Newberry, the wife of prison guard Mike Newberry, has been abducted by a man demanding $126 000. Horatio listens to the kidnapper’s phone call and identifies the voice as that of Kyle Harmon. Police trace Kyle’s location via his ankle bracelet and descend on an abandoned stadium, where Kathleen Newberry is found unharmed. Kyle, however, has prised off his bracelet and gone on the run.

The CSIs are left facing a puzzle – why would Kyle hatch a plan to kidnap Mrs Newberry only to abandon her? “Maybe it wasn’t his plan,” Horatio speculates. The CSI believes Kyle was forced into this desperate course of action by the true culprit – Rick Bates, who was trying to extort $126 000 out of Mike Newberry. But there is still not enough proof to tie Bates to the crime, and Kyle remains a wanted man. Horatio believes the boy has been used – but nothing can quite prepare him for what Yelina discovers about the young lad’s identity.

Also this week, Boa Vista is surprised to find former CSI Ryan Wolfe working at a firing range. Wolfe is waiting for his application to rejoin the police to be approved, and in the meantime he is loading guns and teaching people how to shoot. But Wolfe’s new line of work lands him in trouble when his fingerprint is found on one of the bullets fired by Bennett’s murderer. How is he involved?
