Episode 2: Tru Love

Law & Order: Criminal Intent

Detective Mike Logan is joined by new partner Megan Wheeler when he investigates the death of a plastic surgeon. Dr Grant Tyler was killed while riding home on his vintage motorcycle. It does not take Wheeler long to determine that someone tampered with the bike. Tests show that battery acid was put in the fuel tank while Tyler's helmet had been filled with goopy lubricant -making it unwearable. Riding without his helmet, Tyler's death was instantaneous when he came off the bike in a skid.

A visit to Tyler's apartment reveals that the womanising doctor had a habit of making sex tapes with his lovers. One of the tapes features a married woman named Danielle McCaskin. Danielle happens to be the teacher of Tyler's 16-year-old son, Keith.

Danielle's jealous husband, Jack, has a history of abuse and Logan and Wheeler wonder whether he might be responsible for Tyler's murder. They arrive at the McCaskins' apartment to find it empty. In the garage, they discover syringes and lubricant connected to the sabotage of the motorbike. Fearing that Jack may have kidnapped his wife, the detectives race to track down Danielle. But they receive a shock when they trace Danielle's car and find her lying in Keith's arms.

Danielle is arrested on charges of statutory rape while Keith is brought in for questioning. The sordid truth emerges as Danielle admits that she has been seeing her student and that Dr Tyler found out about the relationship. To buy the doctor's silence, Danielle agreed to sleep with him. The schoolteacher claims that her husband then killed the doctor in a fit of rage.

However, it soon transpires that the evidence in the garage was planted. Logan and Wheeler now suspect that Danielle and Keith conspired to kill the boy's father and frame Jack McCaskin for the crime. This theory seems to be confirmed when Danielle skips bail and flees to Canada with her teenage lover, only to be rounded up by police and sent back to New York.

The schoolteacher promptly turns on her young lover and declares that Keith was the one who masterminded the crime. Pressed into telling the truth, Keith admits that he tampered with his father's bike and poured lubricant in the helmet - but insists he did not want to kill him. Keith says he simply wanted revenge on his dad for sleeping with Danielle. The 16-year-old is duly charged with murder, but Logan and Wheeler still face the difficult job of connecting Danielle to the crime. Can they prove that the slippery schoolteacher was equally complicit in Dr Tyler's death?
